What happens when you visit an osteopath?
Firstly you will need to make an
appointment please telephone or call at reception. A session usually
lasts for 35 to 45 minutes, depending on the nature of your
condition.
An initial consultation will involve
questions about your current problem, general health and past medical
history.
Then you will be examined, which may
include a request to undress to your underwear, and you will be informed
as to whether or not osteopathy is likely to be effective.
Osteopathy is seldom painful, and
patients generally find treatment pleasant and relaxing. A
wide variety of manual techniques may be used. Massage to muscles, along
with gentle stretching to muscles and to joints is given, with
particular attention to the problem area.
Occasionally with some patients, one
or two quick joint movements are made which produce clicking sounds.
These manoeuvres are only suggested in certain cases.
Sometimes, strapping or elasticated supports are
recommended. Exercises may be prescribed and advice on posture or diet
may be given.
